Allianz Arena has chosen BIOCAT KS 25D:
"Champion-level limescale protection."
When there are up to 75,000 spectators at a football match at the Allianz Arena, the drinking water installation must be able to handle large volumes of water. The extreme peak loads and pressure losses on match days required new, effective solutions. With the installation of a BIOCAT KS 25D limescale protection system, the iconic football stadium is reducing both maintenance costs and environmental impact – without the use of chemicals.
Allianz Arena has installed a BIOCAT KS 25D limescale protection system to reduce the high maintenance costs caused by the hard water in the area (17–20 °dH). The limescale previously caused destructive deposits that clogged the arena's systems, electronically controlled fittings, etc.

Benjamin Kopetz-Hunke, Technical Manager at the Allianz Arena, explains: "Every year, we had to replace 60 to 70 solenoid valves in automatically controlled fittings due to the hardness of the water. With the new BIOCAT limescale protection system, we have found a solution that prevents annoying limescale deposits in the drinking water installation and demonstrably reduces the risk of faults in fittings and hot water systems."
Need for new solutions at peak loads
The drinking water installation handles large volumes of water on match days, and the peak load and pressure loss required new solutions. Torsten Schmidt, Key Account Manager, WATERCryst, explains:
‘While we can usually work with relatively moderate flow rates in this type of large facility, the stadium's peak loads combined with the inevitable pressure loss in the system were new territory – even for us.’
Natural limescale protection without chemicals
Instead of chemicals, BIOCAT uses biomineralisation, where limescale is bound in harmless crystals. Technical Manager Benjamin Kopetz-Hunke explains: ‘With the chemical-free BIOCAT system, we avoid polluting the environment, as is the case with conventional descaling systems.’
Torsten Schmidt from WATERCryst elaborates: "The natural principle also means that very little rinse water is used. This reduces the impact on wastewater. This is another sustainability factor which, together with documented technical and hygienic suitability for use in drinking water installations and a limescale protection effect of at least 80%, is a natural part of our method."
As technical manager at the Allianz Arena, Benjamin Kopetz-Hunke (right) is always looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of operations. In this case, through chemical-free limescale treatment with BIOCAT.
