Public swimming pool in Nuremberg :
Effective limescale protection and legionella control with BIOCAT
The operations manager of the modern swimming pool in Nuremberg was faced with a growing challenge: Limescale deposits in the hot water system were affecting energy efficiency, increasing operating costs and making it difficult to maintain a temperature high enough to prevent Legionella.
The benefits for the swimming pool
- Legionella risk reduced through stable temperature of 60 °C
- No need for annual manual cleaning or replacements
- Significantly lower energy consumption and operating costs
- Chemical-free limescale protection without wastewater contamination

The swimming pool, which has both a swimming pool and a children's pool as well as an outdoor sauna, uses an average of 8,500 litres of hot water per day and has a storage tank of 4,000 litres. The local water hardness of 15 °dH quickly took effect. Limescale built up to a layer of 2 cm in the tanks. This insulated the heating surfaces and made it difficult to reach the required 60 °C – the limit at which Legionella bacteria cannot survive.
The challenge
The layers of limescale meant that the tanks had to be cleaned manually every year. The temperature often fell below 50 °C, which increased the risk of bacterial growth. At the same time, energy consumption increased significantly. Just 1 mm of limescale can increase energy consumption by up to 10% – here, the layers were up to 20 mm thick.
The solution
WATERCryst installed a KS 11000 BIOCAT system, which protects the hot water system from limescale – completely without chemicals. The system treats the limescale through biomineralisation, preventing it from sticking. The water's natural mineral content is preserved, and no salt, phosphate or other substances are added.
The swimming pool now has a solution that is energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and future-proof – with proven effectiveness in daily operation.

BIOCAT KS 11000
Dim. with a capacity of 11,000 litres/day
BIOCAT KS 11000 ensures environmentally friendly limescale protection for the entire drinking water installation with its own thermal disinfection. The system is easy to integrate into technical rooms and existing installations. BIOCAT KS 11000 requires only minimal maintenance.
